A Peek Behind The Curtains
So, I don’t watch much TV because when I do I don’t want to turn it off.
Well - I found a new show and like I thought I, can’t get enough.
Quarterback on Netflix.
Anything sports is my jam. While I don’t go looking to turn on a game I’ll definitely watch it when it’s on. The dedication it takes to be a pro athlete is just incredible.
So, why Quarterback?
First - being in MO I am a KC fan so when I saw Patrick Mahomes was on, it caught my eye.
Second - I nerd out about people. What they do. Why they do things the way they do. What they think about. How they go to their decision.
Hi. It’s me. I’m the question master, it’s me.
These questions and thoughts don’t come out of judgment, just out of pure curiosity.
The way I was born and raised is one perspective of things; which I definitely know is not the only perspective to see. I grew up in a small town, went to college in a small town, and live in a bigger town than those, but it’s not large by any means. So, when I get the chance to see a peek behind the curtain of others…I’m all in.
Back to the show…there are 3 quarterbacks they feature and follow on and off the field.
Their workouts, their game time rituals, their mindset work, and the time with their kids.
When you see them on TV you see a professional athlete. It’s easy to cheer them on when they pull out a victory and it can also be easy to yell at them when they throw an interception. We tend to glorify them and forget that at the end of the day - they’re people. They’re husbands, dads, friends, sons.
Each one of these guys operates differently, but they’re all still people.
One has a personal chef, one goes right home after a game and does bed and bathtime with his kids, one volunteer in the community as much as possible, one studies play with the help of his wife. one completely takes Tuesdays off from all things football, one does brain work every single day, one comes home to a full house of friends and family after a game, and one has his wife pick out his clothes for every postgame interview.
To hear them talk through both the incredible games they had and the shitty ones is fascinating to me. How they process what they should have done, how they adjust their training, and then how they execute next time.
Now, am I going to go out of my way to turn on a Vikings game next week? Probably not. But if they happen to be on, you bet I’m going to be a little more invested in it because I feel more connected to them. Just from learning more about them from the show!
Kirk Cousins went from being a random pro football player on TV to a husband, a dad who sings bedtime prayers to his son (which totally made me tear up!), and a community leader.
What does Quarterback have to do with anything business-related?
I feel we all have a love/hate with social media. We strive to find a balance of showing up as often as we can, using it to our advantage since it’s free, taking much-needed breaks without feeling guilty, and not slipping into the comparison game.
But when we show up as our true selves and share about our business, our lives, our hobbies, the quirky things we do - it builds connections. It can build a sense of trust. It can empower others. It can help people see that we’re more than our business…which you totally are.
Maybe not everyone needs your product/service but when they hear someone that does there’s a good chance they’ll remember to tag you. Connecting with your customers builds your sales army which we all need in order to stay in business.
And some are probably thinking - I don’t want to pull back the curtain. That’s simple…don’t! Do what you’re most comfortable with.
Share about your business values, why you started the business, and why you sell the products you sell. There are ways to share that aren’t you doing a “get ready with me” every morning (I sure as hell am not because it looks exhausting and I’m usually running late already!).
Look for ways to find the connections so people can get to know you - your coffee order, your kids kicking their socks off in the dead of winter, your fav late night snack. People buy from people.
Okay, now the question…who’s watched Quarterback and are you loving it?!
