Are You Planning Your Pivot Without Fear?

I was talking with my daughter, Ellie, the other day, and the subject of “what would you like to do when you grow up” came up and I was a little blown away by her answer.

“I want to be a horse trainer. And then when I’m done with that I want to be a vet-narian. And then when I’m done with that I want to be a hair girl.”

The girl is planning her pivots without fear and she’s not even 6!

The innocence that came with that answer got me thinking...

How often do we know that deep down we’re not doing to work that would fulfill us, but never switch?

That because we post our new business on Facebook, it’s capital T “truth” and can never be changed.

First off, we’re asked to decide our career path when we’re around 18 (another discussion for another day) and more than 50% of the time there has been no work experience. Zero!

Then, we feel because we’ve chosen that path, that is where we have to stay. For.Ev.Ver. (yes, I love Sandlot).

Why?

Is it fear of change?
Is it fear of judgment?
Do we feel inadequate to do anything else?
Embarrassment?

As we grow in age, our personalities change, we experience new things that peak our interests, our family life changes, and we learn so much.

While change and growth maybe a little scary, don’t completely block it out!

It’s okay to change your mind if your work isn’t serving you.
It’s okay to niche your offering to avoid work (and/or clients) you don't love.
It’s okay to close down and restart in a new direction.
It’s okay to take a break and refocus.

Obviously, finances and making sure you’re taking care of yourself and your family comes into play on a lot of these things, so please be mindful of that!

Don’t let the views of others keep you from fulfilling your purpose or going after what you truly feel called to do. If you’re a kind human, you put good things into the world, and give back to others….go get your pivot on!
