Singing Through the Chaos

Have you ever watched Daniel Tiger?

If not, I think you’ll understand without needing to go binge-watch.

If yes, you’ll totally get this.

Something Daniel's mom does a lot…sing.

There’s a song for everything.

When I feel like I could lose my shit at home or really at any time….my immediate response is to yell, but because I’m a recovering yeller - I try to sing.

It’s nothing recording studio-worthy, which makes it even more enjoyable for my family.

Some fun lyrics that are coming to mind…

“It’s all okaaaaaaaay. I’m not going to lose my miiiiind. It’s all okaaaaaay. I’m going to keep surrrrrendering and not overthiiiiiiink”

“It’s time to leave the house if we’re not going to be late (again), so get your water bottle, your snack, and your shoes, pleeeeease, and thank youuuuuu.” (this one is followed up by my backup singer who doesn’t actually sing, but loudly says  “mom, stop!”)

“What the F*ck is going onnnnnnn.” That one is on repeat, probably more than most.

I’ve found that when I sing (or attempt to), my nervous system stays calmer, I don’t sound like an a-hole to my kids, and if I can get really creative with the lyrics, Ellie might even turn her scowl of annoyance into a smile.

As I’m writing this (in a public place), it makes me laugh because it seems like such a weird thing to do. Funny enough, I’ve heard others say they do the same thing.

One of my clients stated, “My staff knows that when I sing a statement, I’m about to lose my sh*t!”

Do you hang out with Daniel Tiger's mom and sing like her?

If not, is there something you do that helps you keep your cool when your brain wants to take over with emotions?!

Deep breathes. A walk. A meditation. A good cry. A good scream. Or maybe you’re just cool as a cucumber and don’t need any of these?!

How does this have to do with anything business?

I know these feelings come up when I’ve overcommitted, when I’m impatient, or when I choose to multitask (physically or just in my head) instead of being present.

Life and business go hand in hand.

When I work with clients, we talk through the things that bring up their frustrations and create the necessary changes in their business to give them some space back. Then they can sing any kind they’d like, not the ones that just keep them from losing their shit!
