Sometimes You Have To Remove Your Blinders

Have you ever read something on the internet and you ask yourself, “how in the world did I not think of doing that?”

This isn’t exactly business, but let’s be honest I will do my best to make an analogy out of it.

So, I’m 5’1, slimmer waist, and athletic thighs.

I’m not complaining nor am I bragging because you know what is not made for this body type?

Jeans. F-ing jeans.

I can take 25 pairs into the dressing room and come out with one.

Fits in the waist, but the length is for someone 6’1, so the actual knee part hits below my knee and it look weird, so tailoring them wouldn’t even help.
Fits in the thighs, but has that awkward gap in the backside.

Fits over my ankles, but forget about the rest!

Okay, you get the point.

A couple of years ago I started to follow some petite fashion influencers to see how they style their short selves and to learn about the brands they buy to see if I could find the perfect fit.

Let’s just say that didn’t work too well and I went back to the guessing game.

But, the other day I was feeling a little inspired to start looking for some fall outfits and searched petite fashion on the gram and found a gal that I could vibe with.

In reading her bio it said she’s 5’2 (win) and her outfits were simple, yet fun (win). Then I looked at the price of a shirt I liked (yeah, I don’t value clothes that much!). But, I kept looking at her photos and I noticed all her jeans fit super well. I clicked on one photo to look at the brand but first read the caption.

Do you know what it said?

“I cut all the hems of my jeans off so they fit.”

WHAT?!

Some of you are probably not giving a rip about this, but that line blew my mind.

She didn’t find the holy grail of jeans brand, her jeans fit because she took some scissors and cut them to fit the length she wanted! How on earth have I not thought about this? Except for one pair that I cut a weird back part off (thank you, Carly Mitchell!)

Fast forward two days and Ellie and I conquered Once Upon A Child for her and Plato’s Closet for me. I need all the options for jeans and the prices are heaven.

I took in 3 pairs of jeans and walked out with two that fit everywhere except the length. It was Christmas you all. I got home and cut those bad boys off! Thank goodness the distressed look is still in...isn’t it?!

Here are my business thoughts from this riveting story: keep your mind open to different ways of doing and seeing things. We sometimes have to take our blinders off and let go of what we think it has to look like.

If you’re stuck in a spot in your business - reach out and ask someone you trust for their thoughts/perspectives/feedback. You might just be surprised what you find out :)

PS: We need sharper scissors, so if you see me out, don’t look for a straight line!

I’d love to know, do you love or loath jean shopping?
