Thank You Book

It’s Thanksgiving week and don’t worry,  I’m not here to talk about a Black Friday Deal.

I’m coming in all cliché and am talking about a Thank You Book.

(Almost) every night for almost 5 years, Ellie and I do our 10 Thank You’s.

And by thank you’s I mean our gratitudes, but she called it her thank you’s, so that stuck.

Each night part of her bedtime routine is listing out her 10. The first 6 are always the same:

  • Dad

  • Mom

  • Nugget

  • Snuggles

  • Puppy

  • Gracie

Obviously, not in order of popularity 😉

The other four come from that day. Sometimes it’s from gymnastics, who she saw, what she did at school, and sometimes it’s something super random.

Sometimes they flow out of her mouth with ease.

And sometimes…it’s hard.

It’s hard to come up with 4 because she didn’t feel like it was the best day.

And that’s when I feel like the thank you book is the most important.

To take the time to really think through the day and find even the smallest thing. Or to realize that the day wasn’t completely awful, but maybe just part of it or a small moment.

It’s the same for me. Sometimes it’s super easy to write out 10 and sometimes I get to #4 and I’m struggling.

The other day was a tough one and we talked about the power of the thank you’s. Knowing we’re going to be filling them out that night helps us pause and take note of things during the day. A pause to say thank you. A pause to appreciate something.

Someone holding the door.
A green light when you’re running right on time.
A review on Google.
Sunshine.
A deep convo with a friend.

And like I said, it’s cliché because it’s the week of Thanksgiving, but maybe a good reminder as we’re going into a time of the year that can feel like chaos.

The doorbuster sales that we’re bombarded with (good lord my email is insane). The awkward family moments because of drastically different points of view. The feeling that we have to keep up with everything and everyone with business or even their gift list. The feeling that we’re closing in on the year and we haven’t hit a goal.

And sometimes…all of that at the same time.

In this time let’s look for the pause. For the thank you moments.

And lastly, look at how you can go about your day and be a thank you moment in someone else’s thank you book 💕
